Petty Timeline

1959 Richard wins his first professional race in NASCAR’s Convertible division at Columbia Speedway on July 18th. Richard also wins NASCAR’s Grand National Rookie of the Year.

1960 Richard wins first race in Grand National division on February 28th. Richard finishes 2nd at Dixie Motor Speedway in Birmingham, Alabama. Richard wins three events and finishes 2nd in the point standings.

1961 Richard finishes 8th in points.

1962 Richard picks up 8 wins and finishes 2nd in points. He is also named Most Popular Driver.

1963 Richard wins 14 races and finishes 2nd in points.

1964 Richard wins first Daytona 500 and points championship.

1965 Chrysler and the Pettys boycott NASCAR over the banning of the Hemi-engine. Richard makes his drag racing debut and wins a national event in Bristol, Tennessee. A return to NASCAR late in the year produces four wins.

1966 Richard wins 2nd Daytona 500. Richard finishes 3rd in the point standings.

1967 In Darlington, Richard breaks his father’s record of 54 wins. He wins 10 races in a row, 27 races total and claims his 2nd title, the 5th in a row for Petty Racing.

1968 Richard collects 16 wins and a third–place points finish. He is again voted Most Popular Driver.

1969 Richard scores 9 wins with a Ford Torino, the only time he competed in a Ford.

1971 Richard wins 3rd Daytona victory and 3rd Championship.

1972 Richard wins 4th Championship.

1973 Richard wins 4th Daytona 500 and is inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

1974 Richard wins his 5th Daytona 500 and his 5th Championship. He is again voted Most Popular Driver.

1975 Richard wins his 6th Championship. He wins 13 events including the World 600 in Charlotte, NC, and his first victory at that speedway.

1976 Richard voted Most Popular Driver

1977 Richard scores five wins and a second–place points finish, plus the vote for Most Popular Driver.

1979 Kyle wins his ARCA debut in Daytona and makes his first Winston Cup start in Talladega, AL, finishing ninth. Richard wins 7th Championship.

1980 Richard posts two wins and finishes fourth place in point standings.

1981 Richard wins his 7th Daytona 500.

1983 Richard celebrates 25 years of racing with three more wins.

1984 Richard wins his 200th career race in Daytona.

1985 Kyle races for Wood Brothers Racing.

1986 Richard makes 1,000th career start at Michigan Speedway. Kyle wins at Richmond International Raceway, the first Winston Cup victory of his career, and becomes the first third–generation driver to win in NASCAR.

1987 Kyle wins World 600 at Charlotte. Richard finishes in 4th place.

1988 Richard escapes serious injury in a terrifying end–over–end crash at the Daytona 500 and celebrates 30 years as a driver.

1989 Kyle leaves Wood Brothers Racing and moves to SABCO Racing.

1991 Following a win in Rockingham, NC, Kyle is injured in Talladega and misses most of the season with a broken leg.

1992 Richard begins his final season as a driver with his Fan Appreciation Tour and is honored at every track. He receives the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award, from President Bush and is inducted into Daytona’s Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame. Kyle finishes a career high fifth place in point standings.

1993 Kyle finishes fifth place in the point standing and wins in Pocono, PA.

1995 Kyle wins in Dover in a SABCO Pontiac.

1997 Kyle forms his own race team and names it PE2. He finishes 15th in points, the highest finishing new team.

1998 Kyle wins True Value Man of the Year.

1999 Kyle relocates race team and returns home to Petty Enterprises in Level Cross, NC.

2002 Sue Bee Honey joins Kyle’s team as a sponsor.

2003 Kyle takes the seat of the #45 Georgia-Pacific/Brawny Dodge.
